We're full swing into motorcycle season in our beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, and the Parkway is seeing more and more riders. Nice.

Motorcycle Insurance in North Carolina unchanged as helmet law remainsFor the last decade, motorcycle enthusiasts have been trying unsuccessfully to get the NC Helmet Law repealed. In March of this year, the House Transportation Committee agreed to modify the required helmet law. Helmets would only be required for riders under 21 and new riders that have had a license for under a year.

The change in motorcycle insurance would have been that riders not wearing helmets would have to carry enough coverage to cover the first ten thousand dollars of their medical bills from crash injuries. Otherwise, North Carolina would have joined the other 31 states that allow most bikers to make up their own mind about whether or not they want to wear a helmet.

As you can imagine, it is still a controversial discussion. While some believe bikers should be allowed to accept the risk themselves, others feel strongly that North Carolina's helmet requirement is a big life-saver. The Brain Injury Advisory Council certainly thinks so.

After a dozen or so emergency room doctors in white lab coats mad a powerful case for keeping the law in tact, saying that repealing the law would result in more deaths and serious head injuries, which in turn would drive up medical costs for everyone - hospitals, taxpayers, and families.

General Assembly didn't approve the proposal, but they did agree to study the request and the related medical and economic issues.

What do you think? Should motorcycle riders be required to wear helmets in North Carolina?
